The holiday season brings with it a myriad of sights, sounds, and experiences. It can be a hectic time brimming with heaping helpings of stress; dashing from store to store shopping for that perfect gift for each name on your list; and all the while enduring long lines and horrific traffic jams. But the rewards we reap from that experience are great and make it all worthwhile. Holiday get-togethers and loving reunions with family, the laughter of wide-eyed children, and aromas of cinnamon and spice wafting through the air, accompanied by twinkling lights and beautiful decorations are all good for our souls. Holiday time is filled with wonder and magic that stirs up our inner child and it inspires us to reach out to everyone with love and compassion.
So while you’re making your holiday plans this year please remember those less fortunate. There are folks in every community across America enduring grave illnesses, financial stress, and homelessness that have no one to turn to. Giving generously from your heart may make a difference in whether or not a child will eat or have a pair of shoes. It may ensure a senior citizen will have heat or much needed medications.
While you’re at the grocery store drop canned goods and nonperishables in the collection bins, give the bell ringers on the sidewalks your extra change and dollars, make a donation to the outreach program in your local place of worship, mail a check off to a reputable charity of your choice, or pick an angel off an Angel Tree when you see it and make a holiday wish come true for a child.
Another way to give is by donating time. Local charity organizations may be in need of people to deliver meals or gifts, help with toy assembly, cooks for a community meal, volunteers to visit those who are homebound and offer a few words of cheer and perhaps a small gift.
There are many ways to give back to the community this holiday season. Your holiday will be merrier knowing that you helped make someone else’s holiday special that otherwise would not have happened without your kindness, and this is the greatest gift we can receive.
May you all have a happy holiday filled with cheer, good health, and many memorable moments wrapped in the love of family and friends.
